An Inconvenient Truth: Of Saving Mother Earth

“It is really mind changing!” it’s my first impression when I watched Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth. I watched many documentaries about Global Warming before, and my most favorite was The 11th Hour by Leonado  Di Caprio. But now I am glad to say that Al Gore’s documentary fascinate me more.

Watching a documentary delivered by a (former) politician made me, instantly, be aware of the possibilities of his own political agenda. But, I must say, whether it was for his political gain or not, it was very informative, useful and an eye opener, not only for environmentalists, I bet, but also for everyone, since we share the same earth. It covered a wide range, it had very rich details with data based on experiences and researches that made this documentary very powerful. It was also supported by the director’s smart choice to follow Al Gore’s witty, emotional, and dynamic life experiences, and with his lectures on seminars. But the star, for certain, is Al Gore himself. He was succeeded to convince the audience following his exciting and brief explanation about what global warming is, the reasons, the impacts, and what we can do, without being bored from beginning to the end.

Al Gore looked confident and mastered his theme. It could be understood, because global warming has been his concern since he was in his college. He even said that his failure in the presidential election against Bush in 2000 made him become more conscious about his true concern about this issue. At first, he was struck down by his professor’s research about carbon dioxide level in the open air. That research found out that the carbon dioxide level has been increasing drastically as time gone by. It hauls other huge issues because it made a greenhouse effects towards the atmosphere.

Ozone, the blanket of the earth, has been depleting because of the carbon dioxide that caused the damage of its chemical bond. Its impact is on earth’s surface which now are more directly exposed to the sun rays that make it warmer and warmer. Al Gore showed photos, anecdotes, and graphical diagrams about all of these. The audience were shown how mother earth is suffering at carbon dioxide problems which is getting worst.
The earth has its own way to neutralize it by melting the iceberg in Antarctica. But it’s not the real and final solution because Antarctica is not just chunk of ice floating in the ocean but it is a continent composed of ice from surface to its very bottom. When it continues melting, then the sea level will raise, that means that the lower lands and continents, that are inhabited by millions of people will be drown. As result it will drag many other problems to occur, from the refugees, illness, food sovereignty, and even war.

These problems are fastened by the reality that Antarctica is also the earth mirror for the sun ray. Since Antarctica reflects the sun ray back to the atmosphere, it keeps the sun ray from directly exposing the ocean and heating it. But since Antarctica has other duty to stabilize the temperature of the ocean by melting itself down, so the mirror must double the hard work now: reflecting as preventive and melting as the curative acting the process, simultaneously. The effect is this mirror’s getting narrower by time and the heating problem just became faster than anticipated. If it doesn’t stop, Antarctica will just become a history, the ice treasure will be lost as already had happened in many places around the world. On the other hand, the earth surface are getting warmer until it cannot support to life anymore. Finally the biggest nightmare of humanity can really happened, “EXTINCTION”, not only for human being but for all the creatures. The end of the living.

Believe it or not, we, the human, are the major contributor of the acceleration of this extinction. We, with our industries such as factories, transportation, high usage of energy, deforestation, even our food consumption has been producing higher carbon dioxide each day. It’s ironic that human is the main variable for this global warming to get worse. We are the main factor of this earth’s suffering. Yes, it is really an inconvenient truth that made me agreed to what Al Gore had said, global warming had never been a political issue, it is a moral issue.

But we still have a chance. We can make a difference. By realizing those phenomena, we must not just ignore it. We must be more aware to our situation right now. It’s about time to start new habits, adapt a new culture. A culture not to exploit our earth and makes it suffer more, instead let us decrease our production of carbon dioxide. We can do energy saving, such as lessen the use of our private vehicle and prefer to change it to mass transportation, improve energy efficient industry and technology, plant more trees, recycle materials, moreover support our government in making law against global warming and finally take part in an environment movement. It is for us, for the next generation, for humanity, for us to live longer in our mother earth.
